To me, this was the best line in the episode. He could’ve been written to drop anywhere. In fact, Maine would’ve made the most sense.
But he was in Illinois.
I can’t help but feel like he was across the street from the Novak’s old house, and he wanted to see how they were doing. But there was a new family there, one he didn’t recognise at all, except for the way he could tell humans apart in general. And he wanted to find Dean first, but part of him wanted to find them, and it was what made it where he couldn’t pinpoint Dean because he was too weak to separate the directions.
And that’s how, looking for Dean, he ended up outside of a high school in Milwaukee, or St. Paul, or Columbus, and there’s a blonde girl by herself, his girl two different ways, avoiding the other people around her and watching, searching, protecting. He watches her get into a car with out of state plates, watches her mother scared and panicking as she gets in, and once the door is closed, he sees her pull out a knife that’s so familiar to him, because it’s the closest she could find to his own, at one point her own, sword, and she places it on the dashboard, and leans over and pecks her mother’s cheek, and he can just barely hear “It’s okay, Mom. They haven’t found us yet.”
And he realises that Crowley has been toying with them since the Leviathans- He promised not to go after Dean and Sam, but they never made a deal for the Novaks, and he wasn’t there to protect them. And Claire had just enough memory of Castiel to crash-course as a hunter, and enough memory of her father to not drop out of school, or leave her mother behind and survive, and he’s proud and scared and disappointed in himself, and this little hint inside him, buried deep, reassures him it’s okay, and he’s long sense lost sight of if it’s Jimmy or if it’s the echo of him.
He promised they’d be okay. And they’re okay for now. The universe showed him they were survivors, surviving, and he wants to go forward and help, maybe his penance can be that way, but when they spot him, on the side of the road, they don’t spare him a second glance. There’s nothing familiar about him to them, and that, maybe, is a penance too.
And he lets them go for the second time, bittersweet this time, and promises himself but maybe he’s lying that he’ll spare a moment or two to check on them when he’s back up to speed.
And then he has no division. No internal conflict.
Then, when he tries, he finds Dean instantly.
#remember this though #remember sam’s little face #and his actual genuine ‘this is hilarious’ laugh #not like a huff #or just an upturn of the lips #like a full on LAUGH #and dean’s voice #how it was higher then #not as gravelly #he wouldn’t have had whiskey after that beer #not back then #but now#they have bags under their eyes #they don’t play pranks anymore #if they laugh#they’re surprised by it #because it never happens #dean’s voice is rusty and deep #he’s gotten older #they both have #so much older
we’re going home.
